Purpose of Yatra
Energy Swaraj Yatra through a solar bus is the heart of the Energy Swaraj Movement planned to combine synergies of climate change mitigation efforts. The yatra is planned across the country starting from November 2020 until December 2030, nearly 11 years long, to create Energy Swaraj as a public movement. As per the climate clock, only 4-5 years of time is left for us in reaching 1.5 degree celsius temperature (as per the IPCC report). Immediate and drastic actions are required to mitigate accelerating climate change conditions and to take action a self-realization of the impact of human activities on climate, is the need of hour. This 11 years of Energy Swaraj Yatra will be traveling all across the Country, contributing to bring awareness about energy use/misuse among masses and its correlation with climate change. The yatra also aims to bring measurable change in energy use patterns and encourage societies into taking actions for reducing the energy consumption and shifting towards 100% solar powered living.
About the Yatra Bus
The Energy Swaraj Yatra was flagged-off by Shri. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Honourable Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh on 26th November 2020. To create the Energy Swaraj across the country, Dr. Chetan Singh Solanki, a professor from IIT Bombay, brand ambassador of Solar Energy for Govt. of MP, and Founder of the Energy Swaraj Foundation, has pledged not to go home until 2030 and live & travel in the solar bus. Prof. Solanki lives on the bus. It is his mobile home. The bus has the facilities to go through all daily activities like working, meeting, sleeping, cooking, washing, and training. The Solar bus houses solar training and demonstration facilities. The bus is fitted with 3.2 kW solar panels and 6 kWh of battery storage. It has a 3 kVA inverter. Lights, cooler, cookstove, water pump, TV, AC, laptop charging inside the bus are all solar-powered. The engine of the bus runs on diesel. The bus itself demonstrates the possibility of running any building, house or any institute on 100% solar powered energy.
Why Solar Man decided to leave home for 11 years?
Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki is a Professor at the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay. He is also Founder of Energy Swaraj Foundation and Brand Ambassador of Solar Energy for Govt. of MP in India. He is deeply worried by climate change and decided to take the 11 years long Energy Swaraj Yatra through a solar bus. He decided to live in a solar bus, without going home for 11 long years. He is travelling all over country, visiting various organizations, meeting various govt. and corporate officials, teachers, students, talking and making them climate and energy conscious.

To raise awareness about climate change and inspire climate corrective actions, Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki, renowned as the "Solar Man of India" and "Solar Gandhi," is leading the 11-year Energy Swaraj Yatra aboard a solar bus that is traveling across the country. Any institution, industry, or government body has the opportunity to host the Energy Swaraj Yatra. Here are some guidelines to host yatra at your premises.
Ek Bus Ki Atmakatha - Energy Swaraj Yatra
Energy Swaraj Yatra through a solar bus is the heart of the Energy Swaraj Movement planned to combine synergies of climate change mitigation efforts. This Yatra is led by Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki, brings in awareness about climate change, travelling across the Country with Solar bus giving talks, seminars, doing meetings and training programs, in various Organizations and encouraging them to take actions.
“Solar Bus ki Atmakatha” narrates its journey and observations from various cities, expressing concern over the current climate situation. Despite people’s awareness of climate issues, the Solar Bus notes their struggle to take effective action.

About Founder
Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki is a distinguished educator, researcher, innovator, and a certified teacher of the Art of Living's Happiness program. Currently, he is on unpaid leave from IIT Bombay. Since November 2020, he has embarked on the Energy Swaraj Yatra, a remarkable 11-year journey aboard a solar bus, set to continue until 2030 with a pledge to not return home throughout this entire duration.
The Government of Madhya Pradesh has also honored him as the Brand Ambassador of Solar Energy. Furthermore, he is affectionately referred to as the "Solar Man of India" by renowned publications like Times of India, The Hindu, and India Today, and some even hail him as "Solar Gandhi." Embodying the principles of Mahatma Gandhi, Prof. Solanki has introduced the concept of 'Energy Swaraj' and established the Energy Swaraj Foundation (ESF) to foster energy independence globally.
